Incorrectly sized Air Conditioners

It is common for builders to install over-sized air conditioners because these units provide cooling more quickly, thus avoiding any chance of not meeting the cooling demand. Typically, A/C systems are sized based on the number of square feet in the house, usually about 1 ton of cooling for every 300-500 square feet, often with an extra ton or two thrown in for good measure. Another issue is when replacing a system is contractors who simply install a new system based on the old system's size. Unfortunately, over-sized air conditioners “short-cycle” or run for shorter periods of time than engineered for optimum performance. The efficiency of air conditioners is poor when they first start and increases gradually, reaching peak efficiency in about 10 minutes. The problem with this method is that every house is unique. A house with low E windows, natural shading, a low rate of infiltration, and better insulation may need only 50% as much tonnage to cool as one without those features. More importantly, an over-sized A/C system will not be as effective at removing humidity from the air, resulting in a less comfortable home.

The Correct Way to Size an HVAC System

House Pro uses Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) Manual J Load Calculation. Our highly trained technicians will carefully measure your home and evaluate its levels of insulation. Windows’ sizes and quantity will be noted, levels of infiltration will be estimated and internal loads including lighting and kitchen appliances will be taken into consideration. A computerized analysis will be completed that indicates just how much heating and/or cooling capacity your new system should provide. After the installation of your new system is completed, you will receive a copy of the computerized load calculation for your records.
